# 15-Minute Beef Street Tacos That Taste Like the Real Thing

These 15-minute beef street tacos are everything you want on a busy weeknight: fast, full of flavour, and easy on the wallet. Seasoned skirt steak, warm corn tortillas, and fresh toppings make this one a regular in our house.

- **Cook time:** 10 mins
- **Serves:** 4 servings
- **Energy:** 380 kcal

## Ingredients

- 1 lb skirt steak or flank steak, thinly sliced
- 1 tbsp olive oil
- 1 tsp ground cumin
- 1 tsp chili powder
- 1/2 tsp garlic powder
- 1/2 tsp smoked paprika
- 1/2 tsp salt
- 1/4 tsp black pepper
- Juice of 1 lime
- 8 to 12 small corn tortillas
- 1/2 white onion, finely diced
- 1/2 cup fresh cilantro, roughly chopped
- 2 limes cut into wedges for serving
- Optional: hot sauce or salsa verde for topping

## Method

1. **Season the Beef.** Pat the sliced steak dry with paper towels. Toss it in a bowl with cumin, chili powder, garlic powder, smoked paprika, salt, black pepper, and half the lime juice. Give it a good mix so every piece is coated.
2. **Heat the Pan.** Set a cast iron skillet or heavy frying pan over high heat. Let it get properly hot for about 2 minutes. Add the olive oil and swirl to coat.
3. **Cook the Beef.** Add the beef in a single layer, working in batches if needed. Cook for 2 to 3 minutes without stirring to build a good sear, then stir and cook another 1 to 2 minutes until cooked through and slightly caramelised at the edges.
4. **Rest and Chop.** Remove the beef from the pan and let it rest on a board for about 2 minutes. Then give it a rough chop into smaller bite-sized pieces. Squeeze the remaining lime juice over the top.
5. **Warm the Tortillas.** While the beef rests, warm the corn tortillas directly over a gas flame for about 20 seconds per side until lightly charred, or heat them in a dry pan for 30 seconds per side. Stack two per taco.
6. **Assemble and Serve.** Pile the chopped beef onto the doubled-up tortillas. Top with diced white onion and fresh cilantro. Add hot sauce or salsa verde if you like, and serve with extra lime wedges on the side.

## Frequently asked questions

### What cut of beef is best for street tacos?

Skirt steak is my first choice because it has great flavour and cooks quickly. Flank steak is a close second. Both are usually affordable and easy to find at most supermarkets.

### Can I use pre-made taco seasoning instead of individual spices?

Yes, a store-bought taco seasoning packet works fine. Use about one tablespoon for roughly a pound of beef. It saves a step and still tastes good.

### My corn tortillas keep cracking. What am I doing wrong?

They are probably not warm enough. Cold corn tortillas crack easily. Warm them in a dry pan for about 30 seconds per side, or wrap a stack in a damp paper towel and microwave for 30 seconds. That moisture keeps them pliable.

### Is this recipe actually budget friendly?

Skirt steak can vary in price but one pound easily feeds four people with a couple of tacos each, and everything else, tortillas, onion, cilantro, lime, is very inexpensive. You can usually get the whole meal on the table for well under ten dollars depending on where you shop.
