Ingredients
Step-by-Step Method
Gather Your Jars
Set out five mason jars or airtight containers on your counter. Having everything lined up before you start makes the process much faster and you are less likely to lose count.
Mix the Wet Base
In a large mixing bowl combine the Greek yogurt, almond milk, honey or maple syrup, and vanilla extract. Stir well until everything is evenly combined and there are no streaks of yogurt.
Add the Protein Powder
Sift or sprinkle the protein powder into the bowl and stir vigorously for a full minute. Make sure there are no dry clumps left at the bottom of the bowl as these will not dissolve once the oats go in.
Stir in the Oats and Chia Seeds
Add the rolled oats, chia seeds, and a small pinch of salt to the bowl. Stir everything together until well combined. Taste the mixture and adjust sweetness if needed at this stage.
Divide into Jars
Spoon the mixture evenly into each of your five jars. Each jar should be roughly two-thirds full to leave a little room for toppings later. Seal the lids tightly.
Refrigerate Overnight
Place all five jars in the fridge and leave them for at least six hours, though overnight works best. The oats will absorb the liquid and thicken up nicely into a creamy, pudding-like texture.
Add Toppings and Serve
In the morning open a jar, give it a stir, and add a splash of milk if the texture is too thick for your liking. Top with fresh berries, banana slices, granola, or a drizzle of nut butter right before eating. Enjoy straight from the jar or in a bowl.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I use instant oats instead of rolled oats?
You can but I really would not recommend it for a five-day prep. Instant oats get very soft and almost gluey by day two or three. Rolled oats hold their texture much better across the whole week.
Which protein powder works best in overnight oats?
Vanilla whey blends in the smoothest and the flavor pairs well with almost any topping. Casein protein also works nicely because it makes the texture even thicker. Plant-based powders work too, just give everything a really good stir as they can be a bit clumpy.
Are these good for weight loss?
They can absolutely fit into a weight loss plan. The high protein and fiber content helps control hunger, which is half the battle. Just watch your portion on toppings like nut butters and granola as those calories add up faster than you expect.
My oats are too thick in the morning. What did I do wrong?
Nothing went wrong, chia seeds just keep absorbing liquid overnight. Simply stir in a splash of milk or water in the morning until you get the consistency you like. It takes about 10 seconds and fixes it every time.
