Ingredients

Step-by-Step Method

1

Set Out Your Jars

Line up five mason jars or airtight containers with lids on your counter. Having them all in a row makes it easy to work through each one quickly.

2

Add the Base to Each Jar

Add 1 cup of rolled oats to each jar, then pour in 1 cup of milk. Add 1 tablespoon of chia seeds and 1 tablespoon of maple syrup or honey to each jar. Stir each jar well so the chia seeds are evenly distributed and not clumped.

3

Add the Flavoring Ingredients

To Jar 1 add the sliced strawberries and banana. To Jar 2 stir in cocoa powder and peanut butter until the cocoa is fully mixed in. To Jar 3 add the blueberries and lemon zest. To Jar 4 add the diced apple, cinnamon, and nutmeg and give it a good stir. To Jar 5 add the diced peach and vanilla extract and stir.

4

Seal and Refrigerate

Put lids on all five jars and place them in the fridge. Leave them overnight or for at least 6 hours. The oats will absorb the liquid and soften completely.

5

Grab and Go in the Morning

When ready to eat, give the jar a quick stir. If the oats are thicker than you like, splash in a little more milk. Add any fresh toppings like granola or extra fruit right before eating. Enjoy cold straight from the jar or microwave for 60 to 90 seconds if you prefer them warm.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I make overnight oats without chia seeds?

Yes, completely fine. Chia seeds add thickness and some omega-3s but they are not essential for the recipe to work. The oats will still soften perfectly overnight and taste great without them.

Why are my overnight oats too thick in the morning?

Oats absorb liquid as they sit, so by morning they can be thicker than expected. Just stir in a splash of milk before eating and it loosens right up to your preferred consistency.

How many jars can I realistically make at once?

Five jars cover a full work week beautifully. If you are prepping for two people just double each flavor. I usually lay out all five jars at once and go down the row adding each ingredient, almost like an assembly line, and the whole thing takes under 15 minutes.

Is it okay to use steel-cut oats instead of rolled oats?

Steel-cut oats need much more liquid and a longer soaking time, usually at least 8 hours. They also stay chewier and some people love that but it is a noticeably different texture. If you want to try it, increase your liquid ratio and expect to give them a good stir before eating.
